Square Pie Guys grows app sales from $0 to $2m/year

"Open allows us to compete with third-parties and own our data. It's the best decision I’ve made this year without a doubt."

Marc Schechter, Owner @ Square Pie Guys

When Square Pie Guys opened in San Francisco, their goal was simple: make incredible Detroit-style pizza and build a brand people love. Today, with tens of thousands of five-star reviews and a loyal following across the Bay Area, they’ve become one of California’s most recognized modern pizzerias.

But while third-party delivery sales continued to skyrocket, first-party digital sales had started to plateau. The team was using DoorDash Storefront for their website, but it wasn’t driving meaningful growth. At the same time, customer engagement was fragmented — marketing campaigns, SMS tools, and support channels all lived in different systems.

Since adopting Open, Square Pie Guys seen some incredible results:

  • $0 → $2M/year in direct mobile app sales

  • $40k saved annually on SMS by eliminating Attentive and consolidating tools

  • Dozens of hours reclaimed each month from manual campaign and support work

Launching the mobile app

Before Open, Square Pie Guys didn’t have a dedicated mobile app — all their direct traffic was going through their website. Open was able to launch an app with them in a few weeks, feature complete with push notifications, real-time delivery tracking, and a Toast POS integration.

Their new app isn’t just a place to order pizza. It’s an always-on growth engine that knows when to re-engage customers, how to personalize offers, and when to drive them back in.

The result: a digital storefront that feels handcrafted for every guest — one that grows with every order placed.

From phone-in support to automated, AI-driven engagement

Square Pie Guys turned to Open to optimize some key components — ordering, marketing automation, and support — into a single, AI-powered system.

Now, instead of writing messages or building campaigns by hand, the team simply describes what they want to achieve — “Let’s bring back lapsed customers” or “Run a weekday promo” — and Open handles the rest. The platform automatically builds the offer, writes the copy, and sends personalized push notifications and SMS messages to the right audience.

Consolidating tools and growing first party sales

Within ten months, Square Pie Guys grew from zero to $2M a year in native mobile app sales. By consolidating systems and eliminating legacy tools like Attentive, they’re saving over $40K annually while freeing up hours each week for their team to focus on hospitality and operations.

A new era of restaurant growth

Open’s AI now acts as a proactive digital teammate — engaging customers, retaining them, and growing average basket size — all without human coordination.

For Square Pie Guys, it represents more than new sales. It’s a shift from managing systems to managing relationships — a smarter, simpler way to grow.
